Detroit Lions Fans Petition Against Upcoming Nickelback Thanksgiving Performance

Over 40,000 people have signed a petition against Nickelback’s upcoming (well, speculative) Thanksgiving halftime performance during the Detroit Lion/Green Bay Packers showdown. Fortunately for the NFL, they don’t need to reverse any announcements in case they choose not to select them, as no official announcement has yet been made. Detroiters are complaining that between Motown’s history, Kid Rock, Eminem and other Michigan musicians such as Madonna, Teg Nugent and Bob Seger, there are plenty of alternatives other than Nickelback. There are also reports that Mayer Hawthorne could be selected to take the stage after his campaign on Rolling Stone.

Dennis Guttman, a longtime acquaintance of mine, started the petition which has now caught the eye of CNN and Rolling Stone. I spoke over the phone with him today about his petition—that is now international news. When I asked him to talk about the power of a crowd in mobilizing change, he replied, “It’s really been the masses talking about it and sharing it over social media. Hopefully the NFL will take into account the public’s opinion and make a better decision.” Take a look at the petition text:

Just one more great example of how the crowd can (potentially) fuel change. Here’s a link to the petition if you’d like to sign it yourself.
